In this day and age of emerging technology, you need to constantly be on your toes and question the source of all your electronic communications. Especially any communications dealing with funds and payments!
The U.S. Secret Service recently posted an alert about e-mail generated wire frauds. Thieves have targeted buyers, sellers and title companies to divert wired funds at closing. In a recent case, a hacker posed as the Seller in e-mail communications and instructed the title company to wire “their” proceeds to a different person and bank. In a developing reverse scam, sophisticated hackers are posing as the title company’s closing officer in emails and directing the customer to utilize their “new” and updated banking and wire instructions…of course to the hacker’s account!
